Save Money When Doing Grocery Shopping

Even in these tough economic times, we all still gotta eat, right? Well with unemployment going up, and the average workers weekly hours dropping down, how’s anyone to cope with the trials and tribulations of the day? Well, the answer is simple, be frugal. One of the first area’s of your finances that should be addressed (and by most families, it often isn’t at all) is your grocery budget.
Tip # 1: Cut out the items you really don’t need:
The sheer fact is we don’t need half the stuff we buy at the grocery store. I know, we all love our ice cream and our cookies. I mean, what I wouldn’t give right now for hot pocket cause I’m sick of eating rice. What we really need to ask ourselves is this: Do we need it?
Often times you’ll find the answer to that question to be a resounding no. Yet, some of us like to ignore that simple little fact in nearly all of our spending habits. As a nation, we’ve become to complacent with spending money, which is part of the reason so many households are struggling right now. Make that ice cream a special treat for the end of the week. Make sure you get all the essential items first, and if you happen to have any left over in your weekly budget, go for those cookies.
Tip # 2: Buy Generic:
With the stuff we do need, there’s always the generic store brand which is always cheaper than the common household national brand. Generally, these so called “generic” products are exactly the same as their name brand rivals, and more often than not they are produced in the exact same place. The difference is those name brands you love and trust know you love and trust them. So they know that you are going to pay a little extra for the comfort of an old friend.
Tip # 3: Coupons:
That’s right, I mean grocery coupons. Remember how your mom would sit down at the kitchen table with the Sunday newspaper and a pair of scissors and go to town? Well, there was a reason for that. Get yourself a little box to keep em all in. Hold on to all of em just in case, but don’t use them as an excuse to buy something you don’t need at the moment. Even if it’s on sale, show some restraint, because though it may be cheaper you’ll still be spending money on something you just don’t need. You can get the coupons online or in the newspaper.
Tip # 4: Join a discount shoppers club:
Many grocery stores have an advantage card that you can sign up for which offers even more savings, and the best part is most of them are absolutely free! The reason they can do this, is because those little cards provide them with a wealth of information on household spending habits. I know it may seem like big brother peeking into your pantry, but it’s all used to help the companies predict spending trends, and to know what kinds of items they will need to order and in what quantity. Aside from your local grocery store, there are many bulk shopping establishments you could join, these however cost a yearly membership fee. The upside to them is that the sell items in bulk, which makes it cheaper for you. Go there to stock up on those necessary items that you need a lot of such as condiments, toilet tissue, and tiny cheese wheels. Ok, maybe not the tiny cheese wheels…they are good though…
With all these new tools added to your grocery shopping arsenal, you should feel confident enough to take the steps necessary to streamline your food budget, which can relieve stress and financial burden in other areas of your spending. Happy Bargain hunting!
